Christi Cano Breaks New Ground as Texas A&M‑San Antonio’s First Female Head Men’s Golf Coach and Senior Leader

San Antonio – Christi Cano, a hometown athlete who rose to national prominence on the golf circuit, is now shaping the future of Texas A&M University‑San Antonio athletics. In a historic appointment, Cano holds three senior positions simultaneously: head men’s golf coach, assistant athletic director and senior woman leader for the university’s athletic department. Those titles make her the first individual to fill all three roles in the school’s history.

Local Roots, National Success

Cano grew up in the Alamo City, attending Edison High School where she earned a four‑year varsity letter on the golf team. She earned a scholarship to Oklahoma State University, competing among the nation’s top‑20 women golfers and capturing three national championships. Her achievements on the course earned her a reputation that extends well beyond Texas.

Returning Home to Serve

After seven years at Texas A&M‑San Antonio, Cano says the decision to return was driven by the community that supported her early career. “The community gave me so much and provided so much support,” she said, adding a special thanks to the Southside neighborhood that helped raise her.

In her new capacity, Cano emphasizes the importance of offering a different perspective to the department. As senior woman leader, she is the highest‑ranking female official in the athletics office, a role that allows her to advocate for inclusive decision‑making and mentor emerging coaches and administrators.

Coaching Philosophy and Vision

Drawing on her own experience as a player, Cano stresses confidence and effort. “Be confident in yourself,” she advises her athletes. “You’re only young once. Put 100 % effort into what you’re doing because it’s here and then it’s gone in a matter of time.” Her message resonates with the men’s golf team as they launch the 2026‑27 season at the Texas Intercollegiate tournament.

Beyond coaching, Cano has been involved in facility planning, sitting on meetings that oversaw upgrades to the track and field complex and the softball field. “I was fortunate to begin on the planning and get to sit in on meetings with building the track and field and upgrading the softball field,” she noted, highlighting her hands‑on approach to athletic development.

Impact on the Community

Cano’s appointment reflects a broader trend of increasing female leadership within collegiate athletics, especially in traditionally male‑dominated sports. Her presence in a high‑visibility role sends a clear signal to young women in San Antonio that leadership pathways are open in both coaching and administration.

Local fans have responded positively, noting that Cano’s success brings pride to the city and showcases the talent that San Antonio can produce. “She’s a familiar face in the Alamo City,” one longtime supporter said, adding that her story is an inspiration for aspiring athletes across the region.

Looking Ahead

As the men’s golf team prepares for the upcoming season, Cano’s dual focus on competitive excellence and institutional leadership sets a strong foundation for future growth. Her commitment to the community, combined with her proven track record on the national stage, positions Texas A&M‑San Antonio to continue building a respected athletics program.

For students, alumni, and supporters, Cano’s journey from Edison High School to the helm of a university sports department underscores the power of hard work, faith, and a supportive community.
