Mets first baseman Jared Young taken off field on stretcher after head collision

New York – In a dramatic moment Thursday night at Citi Field, Mets first baseman Jared Young was removed from the field on a stretcher after a collision with teammate Nolan McLean resulted in a knee to Young’s head.

Play‑by‑play of the incident

The incident occurred with two outs in the sixth inning of the Mets’ game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Justin Crawford hit a dribbler toward first base, prompting McLean, the Mets’ starting pitcher, to move in and cover the bag. As McLean stepped over a nearly prone Young, his knee struck Young’s head.

Young remained on the ground for an extended period before medics loaded him onto a stretcher. While being taken off the field, he gave a thumbs‑up to the crowd, reassuring fans that he was okay.

Team response and immediate aftermath

The Mets quickly posted an update on social media, stating, “Jared Young is being taken to hospital for further examination. He has feeling in his extremities. Additional updates will be provided when possible.” The team emphasized that Young was conscious and responsive.

McLean stayed in the game after the collision, striking out the next batter to end the inning. He was removed before the following inning, having allowed one run over six innings of work.

Statistical snapshot

Young finished the night 0‑for‑2, leaving him with a .266 batting average, nine home runs and 39 RBIs in 103 games this season. The 31‑year‑old veteran previously played for the Chicago Cubs in 2022 and 2023 before joining the Mets for the past two seasons. Over his 147‑game career, Young has posted a .249 average with 15 home runs and 53 RBIs.

What’s next?

The Mets have not disclosed any further medical details beyond the initial statement that Young has sensation in his limbs. Fans will be watching for updates on his condition and any potential impact on the Mets’ lineup moving forward.

Both Young and McLean have been long‑time members of the Mets organization, and the team’s medical staff will continue to monitor Young’s recovery closely. The incident serves as a reminder of the physical risks inherent in baseball, even in routine infield plays.
