Texas officials condemn controversial leftist streamer Hasan Piker’s UT Austin appearance

The University Democrats student organization at the University of Texas at Austin announced an event featuring far‑left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, slated for Sept. 30 and limited to students, staff and faculty. Piker, known for incendiary rhetoric and anti‑capitalist, anti‑Israel commentary, is expected to discuss topics ranging from immigration to the future of the Democratic Party.

State officials voice strong opposition

Texas leaders from both parties quickly condemned the planned appearance. Gov. Greg Abbott’s press secretary, Andrew Mahaleris, told the Jewish News Syndicate that “terrorist sympathizers have no place in Texas,” adding that Piker’s past statements praising Hamas and claiming America deserved 9/11 are “disgusting rhetoric.”

Sen. Ted Cruz issued a statement calling Piker an “America‑hating Marxist” who celebrates political violence against Republicans. Cruz argued that while Americans are entitled to free speech, “good people must condemn Piker’s incitement,” and criticized Democrats for remaining silent.

Rep. Henry Cuellar also took to X, saying the streamer’s “history of hateful comments about Jewish Americans, 9/11, and Hamas terrorism” makes the event “deeply concerning.” He warned that Jewish students should not feel targeted or unsafe on campus.

Piker defends his right to speak

In response, Piker posted on X that the pressure campaign to cancel the event violates the First Amendment. He wrote, “Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton and now Henry Cuellar have demanded that my speech at UT Austin be cancelled. It’s a public university. This is a direct violation of the 1st amendment. Free speech must be protected.”

University response and broader context

The University Democrats claim the university is violating its own policies by failing to provide a larger venue for the event. Fox News Digital was unable to independently verify that claim. The controversy highlights ongoing tension over how Democratic groups engage with younger voters and the limits of acceptable discourse on college campuses.

While some observers argue that Piker’s popularity could energize younger voters, critics maintain his rhetoric crosses the line into hate speech and extremist propaganda. The debate underscores the broader national conversation about free speech, campus safety, and the role of partisan student groups in higher education.
