President Trump Withdraws Lance Schroyer Nomination for ICE Director

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is withdrawing his nomination of Lance Schroyer to serve as director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The withdrawal was submitted to the Senate along with four other pending nominations.

Trump’s original praise for the nominee

When the nomination was first announced in June, President Trump described Schroyer as a “patriot with real operational experience, and proven leader with decades of experience locking up the worst of the worst.” The former Oklahoma state trooper previously served as a police officer and later led the Emergency Services Unit of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, overseeing special‑operations missions.

Support from Oklahoma leadership

Oklahoma’s senior senator and Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, publicly backed Schroyer’s nomination, emphasizing his law‑enforcement background and commitment to securing the nation’s borders.

ICE’s leadership gap

ICE has not had a Senate‑confirmed director since the Obama administration. Acting director David Venturella has been overseeing the agency after Todd Lyons resigned earlier this year. The lack of a confirmed leader has been a point of criticism from some quarters, but the Trump administration maintains that the agency continues to enforce immigration laws effectively.

No explanation offered

The White House has not provided a reason for the withdrawal, and officials declined to comment further. The decision comes as the administration continues to prioritize strong immigration enforcement while navigating a Senate that has been reluctant to confirm ICE leadership.

What’s next for ICE?

With the nomination withdrawn, the administration may consider another candidate who aligns with President Trump’s emphasis on operational experience and a firm approach to immigration enforcement. The Senate’s role in confirming the next director remains a critical step for the agency’s long‑term stability.
