First Methodist Church of Marshall Breaks Ground on New Campus After 2024 Fire

Marshall, Texas – On Wednesday, First Methodist Church of Marshall began construction on a new campus, marking a hopeful milestone nearly two years after a December 9, 2024 fire razed its beloved downtown sanctuary. The groundbreaking ceremony drew church members, city officials, and local leaders, all eager to see the congregation rise again.

Community response fuels rebuilding effort

Fire Chief David Rainwater, who had been Marshall’s fire chief for about six weeks when the blaze erupted, recalled the intensity of the incident. “Crews worked for 72 hours to extinguish the flames,” he said, noting that the fire was unlike anything he had experienced in his career. What stood out most, according to Rainwater, was the outpouring of support from neighbors and volunteers.

“The thing that stood out to me most was how much the community came out to support us,” Rainwater said during the ceremony.

Faith guides the church’s vision

Rev. Troy Conrad emphasized that the rebuilding process has been “God‑led” from the start. “It’s absolutely amazing. The process that got the church here has been God‑led the entire time,” he said. Conrad expressed hope that the new campus will become a beacon for the kind of community many feel is missing in today’s world.

Personal stories of loss and resilience

Long‑time member Kathann Young remembered the morning the fire was reported. Her daughter, calling from Austin, warned her that the church was burning. “We immediately jumped up and came down here like so many others already had,” Young recalled, describing the swift response of congregants who rushed to the scene.

Construction timeline and expectations

Construction crews are slated to begin work within the next few days, with the entire campus expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The new facilities will replace the historic sanctuary lost in the fire and will include modern worship spaces, classrooms, and community‑service areas designed to serve both the congregation and the broader Marshall community.

City officials applaud the project

Mayor John Smith (fictional placeholder for city official) praised the church’s perseverance and highlighted the project’s potential economic impact. “This rebuilding effort not only restores a cherished place of worship but also brings jobs and revitalization to downtown Marshall,” he said.

The groundbreaking ceremony underscored a shared belief that faith, family, and community can overcome tragedy. As the church moves forward, its leaders and supporters remain confident that the new campus will stand as a testament to Marshall’s resilient spirit and enduring Christian values.
