Teton County issues Code Red alert urging parents to protect children from bear encounters

DRIGGS, Idaho — Teton County officials have activated a Code Red emergency alert after a noticeable uptick in local bear sightings. The county’s fire and rescue department issued a public‑safety message on Monday, urging residents to take immediate precautions to protect families and pets.

What the alert says

The official notice reads, “Daily bear sightings in Teton County. Do not leave small children unattended. Secure pets. All garbage and other attractants should be kept inside or in bear‑proof containers. Harvest fruit trees, remove bird feeders. Do not approach bears.” The county also posted the warning on its social‑media channels, adding that bears have been seen approaching homes, porches, and even testing doors and windows.

Practical steps for residents

County officials recommend several concrete actions:

  • Keep children and pets under direct supervision when outdoors, especially in the evening when bears tend to be most active.
  • Store trash in bear‑proof containers or bring it indoors until collection day.
  • Remove bird feeders and harvest fruit from trees to eliminate easy food sources.
  • If a bear is spotted, remain calm, back away slowly, and never run.
  • Report any “dangerous bear” sightings to Idaho Fish and Game at (208) 525‑7290.

These measures are intended to reduce human‑bear conflicts and keep both residents and wildlife safe.

Why bears are more active now

Experts explain that bears are preparing for winter hibernation and are therefore roaming farther in search of food. The increased activity on both sides of the Tetons has been observed for several weeks, prompting the county’s proactive alert.

How to stay informed

Residents can sign up for future Code Red emergency alerts through the county’s online portal. The system delivers real‑time notifications about wildlife, weather, and other public‑safety concerns.

By following the county’s guidance, families can enjoy the natural beauty of Teton Valley while minimizing the risk of dangerous encounters with bears.
