Sen. Chris Coons wins Delaware Democratic Senate primary, defeats ‘No‑Trump’ challenger

Delaware voters reaffirmed incumbent Senator Chris Coons, D‑Del., on Tuesday, granting him the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. Coons faced a modest field that included former business executive E. No‑Trump Hansen, who changed his name to signal opposition to President Donald Trump, as well as Jeff Appelhans and Mary Louve.

Coons’ decisive victory

Coons captured a comfortable margin over his opponents, positioning himself for what analysts expect to be an easy win in the November general election. The senator, who first entered Congress in 2010 to replace then‑Senator Joe Biden, has served on the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and has held the seat since winning a full term in 2014.

Delaware’s electorate has not sent a Republican to the Senate since 1966, underscoring the state’s deep‑blue reputation. Coons’ long‑standing record and seniority in the chamber were highlighted as key factors in his continued popularity.

‘No‑Trump’ challenger’s platform

Hansen, formerly known as Eric Hansen, entered the race after filing a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission in July. He ran on a platform calling for limits on presidential power, describing President Trump’s “worst impulses” as a justification for legislation to “restore real checks and balances, and root out corruption and self‑dealing.”

In an interview with local outlet WHYY, Hansen explained his name change as a reflection of his commitment to opposing Trump’s agenda. “Trump has said he’ll go after his critics by any means available,” Hansen said. “He will go after me, but I’m willing to bear that risk anyway — because the alternative is letting things get worse for Delawareans.”

Other primary contenders

Jeff Appelhans and Mary Louve also appeared on the ballot, but neither posed a significant challenge to Coons’ lead. The primary results set the stage for a November contest that will likely pit Coons against either former state Representative Mike Katz or former New Castle County councilman John Shulli, both Republicans who have signaled interest in the seat.

Historical context

Coons succeeded Joe Biden in 2010 after Biden was selected as former President Barack Obama’s running mate. Since then, the First State has remained a stronghold for Democrats, with no Republican Senate victory since 1966 when J. Caleb Boggs was defeated by a 29‑year‑old Biden.

The primary outcome reinforces Delaware’s longstanding partisan alignment while highlighting the limited impact of single‑issue challengers who center their campaigns on opposition to the current administration.
