PGA Tour Says No New Return Program for LIV Golf Players

In a virtual media call on Tuesday, PGA Tour Commissioner Brian Rolapp said the organization is not contemplating a new returning‑member program that would let former LIV Golf players rejoin the U.S.‑based circuit, a move similar to the limited‑time option used by Brooks Koepka in January.

Accountability and Discipline Remain Core Principles

Rolapp stressed that “accountability and discipline are essential elements for any sports league and remain guiding principles for the PGA Tour.” He added that the Tour’s focus is on what is best for the organization as it prepares to launch a two‑tiered membership structure in 2028.

LIV Golf’s Bankruptcy and Player Uncertainty

LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey last week, leaving the futures of its top players in limbo. Major champions Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau appear as the leading unsecured creditors, each owed more than $5 million.

Five‑time major winner Brooks Koepka was the only player to take advantage of the limited‑time returning‑member program earlier this year, rejoining the PGA Tour after leaving LIV Golf in December. Koepka’s return came with a five‑year forfeiture of potential equity in the Tour’s Player Equity Program, an estimated loss of $50‑85 million depending on his performance and the Tour’s growth.

Future of LIV Golf

The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which owned 100 percent of LIV Golf, announced in April that further investment no longer aligned with its strategy and that funding would cease at the close of the 2026 season. The fund’s withdrawal has left LIV seeking a path out of bankruptcy, with hopes to emerge by early 2027.

Rolapp’s comments signal that the PGA Tour will continue to enforce its standards without creating a blanket pathway for former LIV players. The organization’s upcoming two‑tiered system aims to separate full members from associate members, providing clear criteria for eligibility and advancement.

Implications for the Golf Landscape

By refusing to open a general return channel, the PGA Tour underscores its commitment to maintaining a competitive environment rooted in merit and financial responsibility. While the decision may disappoint some fans hoping for a broader reconciliation, it aligns with the Tour’s long‑term vision of stability and growth.

Industry observers note that the move could influence how other professional sports leagues handle defections and mergers, especially when financial distress and legal proceedings are involved. For now, the PGA Tour remains focused on its internal reforms and the upcoming launch of its new membership model.
