West Haven student arrested after posting AI‑generated ‘Cat in the Hat’ threat

West Haven police announced Monday that a student from Bailey Middle School has been arrested in connection with a threatening video that featured a distorted “Cat in the Hat” character. The video, part of a nationwide trend of AI‑generated or altered cartoon images used to intimidate schools, was posted on social media and quickly drew the attention of law‑enforcement officials.

District and police response

Earlier this week, the West Haven school district warned families that Bailey Middle School had been mentioned online in relation to the trend. At that time, officials described the posts as likely a hoax but emphasized that they were treating the situation seriously. In response, the district, the police department, and city officials coordinated a precautionary increase in police presence at the school for the Monday return of students.

Following the arrest, the case has been forwarded to the West Haven Board of Education for further review. Police have not released details about the specific charges the student may face or the exact content of the posted video.

Police statement

“The West Haven Police Department takes any threat directed toward our schools, staff, or students extremely seriously,” the department wrote in a Facebook post. “We will continue to investigate all threats thoroughly, utilize every available resource, and take appropriate enforcement action to hold those responsible accountable.”

The incident underscores the growing concern among educators and law‑enforcement agencies about the misuse of AI and social‑media platforms to spread fear in schools. While the investigation is ongoing, officials are urging parents and students to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious online activity promptly.

Community impact

Parents in the West Haven community expressed relief that the police acted swiftly, while also voicing concerns about the broader implications of AI‑generated threats. School administrators reiterated their commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment and promised to keep families informed as the situation develops.
