Sean McVay credits wife’s reality check for staying on after tough 2022 Rams season

Los Angeles – After a disappointing 5‑12 finish in 2022, the Rams’ head coach faced a crossroads. Sean McVay, who has guided the team to a Super Bowl victory and three consecutive winning seasons since, told 60 Minutes that he seriously considered stepping away from football to pursue media opportunities.

Wife’s blunt advice sparked a turning point

McVay described being in a “dark” place after the loss‑laden season, feeling that a few defeats reflected on him personally. He explained that his wife, Veronika Khomyn, gave him a stark reality check. “I was ready to run away from coaching and hide behind a convenient narrative of some media opportunities,” he said. “When I told Veronika I might take a year off, she said, ‘That never sounded like the kind of leader you wanted to be.’”

The coach says her words were the wake‑up call he needed. “I would have been quitting. That would have been the truth,” McVay added. “I couldn’t handle the losses, but I chose to stay and fight for the team.”

From a losing season to a championship run

Since that low point, the Rams have turned the corner. The franchise posted back‑to‑back 10‑7 records in 2023 and 2024, then improved to 12‑5 in 2025, earning a spot in the NFC Championship game. Although they fell to the Seattle Seahawks, who went on to win the Super Bowl, the season was hailed as a success and a testament to the coach’s resilience.

McVay remains on the sidelines, and the organization is making moves to return to the Super Bowl. The Rams added star pass rusher Myles Garrett in a trade with the Cleveland Browns and coaxed veteran defensive tackle Aaron Donald out of retirement, bolstering a defense that has been a cornerstone of the team’s recent success.

Upcoming schedule and early challenges

Los Angeles opened the 2026 season with a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in a historic Week 1 game played in Australia. The Rams will host the New York Giants on Monday night in Week 2, giving the team a chance to rebound on home turf.

McVay’s decision to stay, spurred by his wife’s candid counsel, underscores the personal sacrifices coaches make behind the scenes. It also highlights the importance of family support in navigating the pressures of professional sports.

As the Rams look ahead, fans can expect a team motivated by recent adversity, a coach committed to leading by example, and a front office willing to invest in top talent to chase another championship run.
