Indiana State Police Pursuit Ends in Crash, Two Injured in Fall Creek

Indianapolis – Early Sunday morning, a stolen car was spotted by an Indiana State Police trooper near the intersection of I‑70 and Post Road just after 9 a.m. The driver fled when the trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, prompting a high‑speed pursuit.

Wrong‑way driving on I‑65

During the chase, the suspect entered I‑65 and proceeded southward in the northbound lanes, creating a dangerous wrong‑way situation. Recognizing the heightened risk to other motorists, the trooper made the decision to end the pursuit to protect public safety.

Crash into Fall Creek

Moments after the pursuit was called off, the stolen vehicle left the roadway and plunged into Fall Creek near the I‑65 and 21st Street overpass. The impact caused the car to become fully submerged in the water.

Emergency response

First‑responders from Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) arrived quickly on the scene. Rescue crews pulled the driver and the passenger from the submerged vehicle. The driver was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, while the passenger sustained serious injuries and also received medical care.

An IFD dive team was dispatched to assist with the recovery effort and to ensure the waterway was safe after the incident.

Public‑safety implications

The incident underscores the challenges law‑enforcement faces when pursuing stolen vehicles on busy highways. Troopers must balance the need to apprehend suspects with the responsibility to keep other road users safe. In this case, the decision to terminate the pursuit likely prevented further danger on the interstate.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the theft, the pursuit, and the crash. No additional details about the suspect’s identity or motive have been released at this time.

Community reminder

Residents are reminded to stay alert while driving, especially near major interchanges such as I‑70 and I‑65. If a police vehicle signals a pursuit, it is safest to keep a safe distance and allow officers to manage the situation.
