Trump Offers Funding to Save Kennedy Center, Calls for His Name on Building

Washington — The Kennedy Center is facing a dire financial crunch that could force it to shut its doors within weeks, according to a draft resolution circulated to its board of trustees. The document, obtained by major newspapers, warns of “certain fiscal collapse” unless the Center restores President Donald J. Trump’s name to the building’s exterior.

Trump’s Conditional Rescue Offer

President Trump has publicly offered to supply the funds required to keep the Center operational, but he insists that “appropriate recognition” of his contributions be included. Board member and longtime Trump ally Paolo Zampolli told the press, “Trump attracts money. So when Trump says donate to this place, everyone will donate.” The administration’s stance is clear: without the name restoration, the President is unlikely to lead the rescue effort or oversee the planned renovation.

Financial Turmoil and Legal Battles

The Center’s financial woes have been compounded by leadership turnover and litigation since Trump placed loyalists on the board and was elected chairman last year. Artists have withdrawn from scheduled events and ticket sales have slipped. In December, Trump’s name was added to the building’s exterior, prompting a lawsuit that resulted in a judge ordering its removal. The lettering was taken down in June, but court filings in August show the board voted again to reinstall the name and close the main building for a years‑long renovation.

In court documents, the Center warned that without the name change it would have to return “hundreds of millions of dollars” in private donations already pledged, citing its bylaws. An appeals court was told that all of that money would be “immediately returned, or not received by the Center.”

Safety Concerns Prompt Immediate Action

Trustees are also being asked to close the main building immediately after a section of ceiling plaster fell about 60 feet in the Grand Foyer on September 4, rendering the space unsafe for occupancy. No injuries were reported, but the incident bolsters the Center’s argument that extensive renovations are essential to prevent further deterioration.

Lawyers for the venue contend that without a comprehensive overhaul the structure could become “decrepit” and eventually need to be demolished. In April, officials gave reporters a tour of the boiler room, backstage areas, parking garages, and HVAC system to illustrate the scope of needed repairs.

Why Restoring Trump’s Name Matters

Supporters argue that reinstating President Trump’s name not only honors his financial commitment but also signals confidence to donors nationwide. The draft resolution lists ten possible inscriptions for the building’s plaque, including one that reads, “Renovation Restoration and Endowment overseen by President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.” Another option credits “the generosity of President Donald J. Trump.”

Critics have questioned the propriety of attaching a sitting president’s name to a cultural institution, but the administration maintains that the naming is a transparent acknowledgment of the President’s direct financial involvement.

Looking Ahead

The board’s special meeting on Tuesday will decide whether to adopt the proposed inscription and proceed with the closure for renovation. If the resolution passes, the Center expects to receive the promised funding and avoid the looming bankruptcy that could jeopardize one of the nation’s premier performing‑arts venues.

President Trump’s willingness to step in financially underscores his broader commitment to preserving American cultural landmarks while ensuring that donors see the tangible impact of their contributions.
