Riverwalk Fine Art Fair Returns to Downtown Naperville for September 19‑20

Naperville residents and visitors alike can look forward to the annual Riverwalk Fine Art Fair this weekend. The two‑day event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20, along Jackson Avenue between Main and Eagle Streets.

From 9/11 to a 25‑Year Legacy

When the fair first opened in 2001, the nation was still reeling from the attacks of Sept. 11. Despite a reduced artist roster caused by air‑space closures, the downtown Riverwalk buzzed with color, life, and a sense of communal healing. The founder later recalled how the art displayed that day helped ease the anxiety and grief that filled the city’s churches and homes.

That same founder, who began co‑directing the fair in 2002, has now overseen its growth for a quarter‑century. Today the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair is recognized as one of the nation’s premier outdoor art markets, drawing thousands of patrons who stroll the streets, admire handmade works, and support local creators.

Community Roots and Mentorship

The fair’s success is rooted in mentorship and faith‑based values. Stacey McMurphy Forand, a longtime Naperville arts advocate, introduced the current director to the world of art fairs and emphasized the importance of service to the community. When Forand passed away in 2021, the fair’s leadership honored her legacy by continuing to prioritize family‑friendly programming and a spirit of gratitude.

“Art brings people together, especially in times of uncertainty,” the director said. “We see families, seniors, and young artists all sharing in the experience, and that reinforces the strength of our community.”

What to Expect

Visitors can expect a diverse array of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, and textiles, all created by regional artists. Live music, food trucks, and interactive stations for children add to the festive atmosphere. The fair also offers opportunities for local nonprofits to showcase their missions, reinforcing the event’s charitable focus.

For those interested in learning more about the fair or becoming a vendor, additional information is available on the Naperville Art League website.

Why It Matters

Beyond the visual delight, research consistently shows that viewing art reduces stress, sharpens focus, and lifts mood. In a city that values family, faith, and personal liberty, the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair serves as a tangible reminder that beauty and community thrive together.

Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first‑time visitor, the fair offers a chance to support local talent, enjoy a day outdoors, and experience the resilience that defines Naperville.
