Cape Cod rescue team frees entangled minke whale after two‑day search

Residents of Cape Cod witnessed a rare marine rescue this week when the Center for Coastal Studies’ Marine Animal Entanglement Response Program freed a minke whale that had been struggling with a heavy rope wrapped around its body and lodged in its mouth.

How the whale was found

The 18‑foot, endangered whale was first reported to the nonprofit on Sunday after a local boater spotted the animal with rope and buoys tangled in its mouth. The Center dispatched a response team on Monday, but the whale eluded them. An aerial survey conducted on Tuesday finally located the creature off the coast of Eastham, allowing the team to launch a small‑boat operation.

Rescue operation

Using a hook‑shaped knife, rescuers carefully cut the rope while keeping the whale’s flipper intact. Most of the line was removed; a small portion that had penetrated the flipper was left in place to prevent excessive bleeding. Video released by the Center shows the delicate work, highlighting the skill and patience of the volunteers.

Outlook for the whale

Center director Scott Landry noted that the whale’s prognosis was initially poor because the rope would have prevented it from feeding. However, after the rope was cleared, the whale resumed normal swimming, giving the team optimism about its recovery. Landry described the successful locate‑and‑rescue as “very lucky and fortunate,” emphasizing how uncommon it is to track an entangled minke whale after it moves away from its original sighting.

How the public can help

Boaters and coastal residents are encouraged to report any sightings of entangled marine animals. The Center for Coastal Studies can be reached at 1‑800‑900‑3622, and urgent reports can also be radioed to the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF channel 16.

Why the rescue matters

Entanglements remain a leading threat to marine mammals along the Atlantic seaboard. Quick community reporting and coordinated response efforts, like those demonstrated off Cape Cod, are essential to protecting vulnerable species and preserving the region’s natural heritage for future generations.
