Rep Tom Tiffany rescued after plane loses power, lands in Lake Wausau

Wisconsin Republican Representative Tom Tiffany, who is also a candidate for governor, was rescued Sunday after the four‑seat, single‑engine plane he was traveling in lost power while approaching Wausau Downtown Airport. The aircraft came down in Lake Wausau, and Tiffany, the pilot and a passenger swam to shallow water while awaiting rescue.

Emergency landing and rescue

According to a statement released by Tiffany’s office, the plane began to lose power as it neared the runway following the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner. The crew called 911 immediately after the aircraft touched down on the water. As the plane began to submerge, Tiffany and the pilot exited the cockpit and swam to a shallow area where they waited for emergency responders.

First‑responders arrived by boat and escorted both men to the shore. They were then taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released later in the day.

Statement from the representative

In his statement, Rep. Tiffany expressed gratitude, writing, “God was watching over us tonight, and I am incredibly grateful to be here in the hospital with my wife, Chris, by my side. An experience like this reminds you just how precious life is.”

The incident underscores the risks associated with small‑plane travel, especially in the region’s variable weather conditions. While the exact cause of the power loss remains under investigation, officials have not indicated any mechanical fault at this time.

Community response

Local residents and officials praised the swift actions of the emergency crews. Wausau fire chief Mark Jensen said, “Our teams responded quickly and safely got the occupants out of the water. We’re relieved everyone is okay.” The incident also prompted a brief temporary closure of the downtown airport while investigators assess the scene.

Rep. Tiffany, who represents Wisconsin’s 7th congressional district, has been a vocal advocate for aviation safety and rural infrastructure. He has previously supported legislation aimed at improving airport funding and pilot training programs.

Looking ahead

While Tiffany’s recovery is expected to be swift, the incident may bring renewed attention to safety protocols for small aircraft operating out of regional airports. State aviation officials have indicated they will review the incident to determine if any additional safety measures are warranted.

For now, the representative’s focus remains on his health and his upcoming gubernatorial campaign, where he continues to emphasize family values, faith, and individual liberty as core pillars of his platform.
