Washington, D.C. – As Lonnie Bunch prepares to retire at the end of 2026, Georgetown University historian Chandra Manning cautions that the next secretary of the Smithsonian Institution will inherit a fraught environment. Manning, a co‑founder of Citizen Historians for the Smithsonian, told WTOP that the museum complex needs a leader who will “commit unswervingly to the ongoing independence of the Smithsonian Institution.”
Independence and vision are top priorities
According to Manning, the Smithsonian’s reputation as “one of the most respected, if not the most respected, museum complex in the world” hinges on preserving its founding mission of diffusing knowledge for the common good. She warned that any deviation could jeopardize that status.
Beyond independence, Manning emphasized the need for a visionary chief who can guide future growth and outreach. “Priority number one will, in fact, need to be defense and safeguarding, at least for the time being,” she said, reflecting concerns about recent clashes with the Trump administration over how U.S. history is presented in museum exhibits.
Desired qualities for the next leader
Manning outlined several attributes she hopes the successor will possess: a calm temperament, scholarly credibility, strong management skills, and the savvy to “read the tea leaves” of the institution’s evolving challenges. She praised Bunch for his ability to discern when to publicly hold the line and when to address disputes more quietly.
While Manning admitted she has no insight into potential candidates, she expressed hope that the next secretary will share Bunch’s commitment to independence and the diffusion of knowledge.
Context of the administration’s criticism
The Smithsonian has faced criticism from the White House, which has questioned the portrayal of U.S. history in its museums. Manning’s comments come amid ongoing debates about federal cultural institutions and their role in shaping public understanding of the nation’s past.
