Craft Cocktails, Curious Menus, and Zero Pretense: An Evening at Twigs Bistro’s Real Replacement, The Wicked Spoon

There is a particular kind of restaurant that does not announce itself loudly. No marquee sign, no velvet rope, no Instagram wall near the entrance. The Wicked Spoon, tucked into the Westfield Vancouver Mall corridor in east Vancouver, is exactly that kind of place — and it is better for it. What you get instead is a genuinely inventive American kitchen, a bar program that treats cocktails as seriously as the entrees, and a room that feels simultaneously polished and completely relaxed.

I first wandered in on a Thursday evening, skeptical in the way that anyone is skeptical of a restaurant attached to a shopping center. I left two hours later already planning my return visit. That trajectory tells you everything you need to know.

The menu reads like someone in the kitchen has strong opinions and is not afraid to act on them. Shareables like the truffle fries arrive in generous portions, golden and fragrant, dusted just enough to taste the earthy note without overwhelming the potato. The flatbreads rotate with the season, which is a detail I appreciate — it signals that the kitchen is paying attention. On my visit, a roasted vegetable version with whipped ricotta was present and quietly spectacular. Order it without overthinking.

Entrees range from a beautifully executed salmon to a prime rib that the table next to me appeared to be in a sincere emotional relationship with. The portions are honest. You will not leave hungry, but you also will not feel like you need to loosen your belt before the check arrives. There is a careful calibration at work here, and it shows.

The cocktail list is where the Wicked Spoon truly earns its place on any Vancouver dining shortlist. The bartenders clearly enjoy their work — ask about the house specialties and you will get an actual conversation rather than a rehearsed pitch. The seasonal offerings lean toward bright, citrus-forward builds in warmer months, with richer, spirit-forward options appearing as the weather turns. The wine selection covers enough ground to satisfy both the casual glass-with-dinner crowd and the person who actually reads the label.

Service here is one of those things that is easy to take for granted until you experience its absence elsewhere. The staff moves efficiently without making you feel rushed. Water glasses stay full. Pacing between courses is genuinely thoughtful. These are small things, but in aggregate they create an evening that feels effortless from your side of the table.

The room itself is warm without being dim — lighting that flatters the food and the company equally. Booths along one wall give you a degree of privacy for a date or a slow dinner with an old friend. The bar seating is lively without crossing into loud, which makes it a strong solo option if you want good food and a cocktail without the full production of a sit-down reservation.

Parking is straightforward given the mall setting, which is an underrated virtue on a busy Friday evening when you just want dinner to begin and end without logistical drama. The location on Southeast 164th Avenue puts it within easy reach from much of east Vancouver and just minutes from the I-205 corridor.

If you have been sleeping on the Wicked Spoon because you assumed a mall-adjacent restaurant was not worth your evening, correct that assumption as soon as your schedule allows. Vancouver has no shortage of places to eat, but places to genuinely enjoy a meal, start to finish, without a single moment of regret — that list is shorter than it should be, and the Wicked Spoon belongs on it.
