Ford recalls 223,000 U.S. F-150 trucks over potentially loose fuel tanks

Ford Motor Company announced a nationwide recall of 223,472 pickup trucks after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified a safety defect that could allow fuel tanks to become detached from the vehicle. The recall affects certain model‑year 2023‑2027 F‑150 trucks sold in the United States.

What the defect means for drivers

The NHTSA warning explains that a detached fuel tank creates a road hazard that raises the likelihood of a crash. In addition, a fuel leak can cause an engine to stall or increase the risk of a fire. Because the issue involves the straps that secure the tank to the vehicle frame, Ford is directing dealers to inspect each affected truck and replace the straps where necessary.

Free repairs for owners

Ford has pledged that all inspections and part replacements will be performed free of charge. Owners will receive a recall notice by mail, and they can also schedule service through their local Ford dealership. The automaker advises drivers not to delay the repair, emphasizing that the safety risk is present even when the vehicle appears to be operating normally.

How the recall was discovered

The defect was uncovered during routine quality‑control testing and a series of field reports that indicated occasional tank movement under heavy vibration. After confirming the problem, Ford worked with the NHTSA to develop a corrective action plan that meets federal safety standards.

Impact on the market

While the recall involves a large number of trucks, analysts note that the F‑150 remains one of the best‑selling vehicles in the United States. The recall is not expected to significantly affect overall sales, but it does underscore the importance of rigorous safety oversight in the automotive industry.

What owners should do

Owners of affected F‑150 trucks should watch for a mailed recall notice that includes a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) verification step. They can also check the NHTSA’s online database by entering their VIN to confirm whether their vehicle is part of the recall. Once confirmed, owners should contact their nearest Ford dealer to arrange an appointment.

Ford’s response

Ford CEO Jim Farley said, “Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to addressing this issue quickly and at no cost to our customers. Our dealers are prepared to handle the repairs efficiently, and we appreciate the cooperation of the NHTSA in ensuring that our trucks remain safe on the road.”

The NHTSA will continue to monitor the situation and will update the public if additional actions are required.
