The Santa Barbara Police Activities League (PAL) used its recent presentation to the Santa Barbara Young Professionals Club as a rallying call for community volunteers. PAL, a nonprofit dedicated to creating positive life opportunities for local youth, is looking for mentors and tutors to help sustain its after‑school programs.
Program highlights and community impact
Executive Director Judie Lugo emphasized the program’s academic success, noting, “We have a 100 percent graduation rate. It is a big deal for us right now. School just started. So around this time, we have youth that have gotten behind. I can tell you right now, every youth that has come to PAL is not behind on homework. They have all completed their assignments and are passing their classes.”
PAL’s model pairs police officers with participating students both on‑the‑job and during extracurricular activities. Officers accompany youth on field trips, provide guidance on career pathways, and help reinforce the importance of education and personal responsibility.
Upcoming events and ways to get involved
In addition to the mentorship drive, PAL is preparing its annual “Trunk or Treat” Halloween celebration, a safe, family‑friendly event that brings together children, parents, and community members. The organization also plans a holiday dinner and gift distribution for members and their families in December.
While PAL does not receive direct city funding, it benefits from community donations and support from the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department. The program’s headquarters are located at the intersection of Chapala and Victoria streets in downtown Santa Barbara, making it easily accessible for volunteers.
How to volunteer
Members of the Santa Barbara Young Professionals Club and other community residents who are interested in serving as mentors or tutors are encouraged to contact PAL directly. Information about volunteer opportunities, event dates, and donation options can be found on the Police Activities League website or through the Santa Barbara Young Professionals Club.
By engaging local professionals in the mentorship effort, PAL aims to reinforce its track record of academic achievement and provide youth with the guidance and support needed to succeed both in school and beyond.
