Mickey Gasper credits Triple‑A Worcester for Red Sox surge in August

Boston – At a youth hitting clinic in Peabody, Red Sox outfielder Mickey Gasper explained how his stint with the Triple‑A Worcester WooSox played a pivotal role in the major‑league club’s dramatic improvement this summer.

Gasper, a 30‑year‑old New Hampshire native who debuted with Boston in 2024, struggled early in his big‑league career, going hitless in 18 at‑bats and posting a .158 average with the Minnesota Twins the previous season. After re‑joining the Red Sox this year, he managed a .243 average and a .613 OPS before being optioned to Triple‑A Worcester in late June.

“It’s a do‑your‑job mentality and we don’t take that lightly,” Gasper told NBC Sports Boston’s Ryan Provencher. “The guys here could be playing on other teams all season, but that’s a testament to how well Craig Breslow got ready for this season, creating depth.”

From Worcester to a historic August

While the Red Sox began flipping their season’s fate, Gasper discovered a new swing in Worcester. When he returned to Boston in August, the results were remarkable: he hit .400 with a 1.100 OPS in 12 games, a performance that placed him among the franchise’s all‑time greats for a single month.

Gasper highlighted the importance of the WooSox’s role in the major‑league club’s success. “We just had guys that were chomping at the bit for their turn to get a chance to perform and to help the Boston Red Sox win,” he said. “You gotta have guys like that.”

Depth built by the WooSox

Gasper’s impact was among the most prolific, but he noted that teammates such as Nick Sogard, Anthony Seigler and Tsung‑Che Cheng also contributed during stretches. All three played under former WooSox manager Chad Tracy, who was called up to Boston after Alex Cora’s early‑season dismissal.

“Nothing says more about you than your numbers,” Gasper added. “If you think you should be up in the big leagues, you have to go out and show up and help the team win.”

Inspiration from fellow players

Gasper said he drew inspiration from Sogard, who has also seen limited big‑league action in recent years but elevated his game this season. “It’s just about doing your job and helping that team win that day,” Gasper emphasized.

The WooSox’s contribution underscores the importance of strong minor‑league systems in building depth for major‑league clubs. By providing a venue for players to refine their skills and stay ready, Worcester helped the Red Sox field a roster capable of turning a struggling season into a contender.

As the Red Sox look ahead to the final stretch of the season, Gasper’s story serves as a reminder that success often begins far from the bright lights of Fenway, in the grind of Triple‑A ballparks where players earn their spots one at‑bat at a time.
