Historic US Open Semifinal Features Two Black American Men for First Time in 50 Years

For the first time in more than half a century, two Black American men will compete against each other in a US Open men’s singles semifinal. Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe will step onto Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday, ensuring that a Black American man will advance to the final – a milestone not achieved since Arthur Ashe’s 1972 appearance.

Arthur Ashe’s Legacy Inspires a New Generation

Ashe remains the only Black American man to capture a Grand Slam singles title, winning the US Open in 1968, the Australian Open in 1970, and Wimbledon in 1975. His historic victories continue to motivate today’s players and fans.

Young Players See Possibility

Michael Major Jr., a 20‑year‑old from the Bahamas and a captain on Howard University’s tennis team, said seeing Shelton and Tiafoe on the biggest stage makes the dream feel attainable. “They’re just normal people at the end of the day, just like me and you,” he told CNN Sports.

Shawn Mitchell Yon, a 21‑year‑old from Queens, New York, echoed that sentiment, calling the semifinal “spectacular” and noting the dedication and hard work the two have shown to reach this point.

Veteran Perspective

MaliVai Washington, the last Black American man to reach a major final in 1996, praised the achievement but warned the final will be an even bigger moment. He reminded readers that no American man has won a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick in 2003, underscoring the difficulty of winning a major for any athlete.

Washington, now 57, runs a real‑estate business and the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation, which teaches tennis, life skills, and financial literacy to young people. He hopes future headlines will celebrate players without emphasizing race, saying, “I look forward to the day when we say Ben Shelton won another major, Frances Tiafoe won another major, and that’s the story.”

Historical Context

The last Black man to win a Grand Slam singles title was France’s Yannick Noah in 1983, and the most recent Black finalist before Ashe was Jo‑Wilfried Tsonga in 2008. The scarcity of Black men in major finals highlights the significance of Shelton and Tiafoe’s breakthrough.

Growth in Participation

According to the USTA’s 2026 US Tennis Participation Report, 3.7 million Black Americans played tennis at least once in 2025, an increase of more than 450,000 from the prior year. Hispanic or Latino participation rose to 19 % in 2025, while Asian/Pacific Islander participation held steady at 11 %.

Development Efforts

Ahsha Rolle, executive director of tennis at New York Junior Tennis & Learning’s Cary Leeds Center, said seeing two Black players on a Grand Slam stage is “great for our kids” and may inspire more youth to pick up the sport. She noted that Tiafoe followed a high‑level junior path, while Shelton chose the college route, winning the NCAA title at the University of Florida.

The American Tennis Association, the nation’s oldest African‑American sports organization, continues to host tournaments for young players who may not yet have USTA points, providing additional pathways to elite competition.

Looking Ahead

Both Major and Yon predict the semifinal will be more exciting than the final on Sunday, underscoring the historic nature of the matchup. As the sport works to broaden its appeal, the success of Shelton and Tiafoe may signal a new era of greater diversity at the highest levels of tennis.
