Indy Bike Ride Raises Awareness for Suicide Prevention and Honors Victims

On Sunday, cyclists gathered at HotBoys in Fountain Square, Indianapolis, for “A Ride for No More Suicide,” a community‑driven event aimed at honoring individuals who died by suicide while shining a light on mental‑health challenges facing families today.

Event details and route

Organized by local advocate Stretch Thalley, the ride began at 5 p.m. and wound its way through downtown Indianapolis, traveling along Mass Avenue and circling Monument Circle before returning to Fountain Square. The route was chosen to showcase the city’s vibrant neighborhoods while providing a visible reminder that mental‑health concerns affect people across all walks of life.

Purpose and personal motivation

Thalley explained that the ride is both a tribute to those who have been lost and a call to action for those still struggling. “I’m trying to get people together to ride for those that are still here struggling and dealing with mental illness,” he said. He reflected on moments when he wondered if he could have been more present for someone who later died by suicide, noting, “I always looked back and wished that I did more, said more or just seemed more present in that person’s life.”

Community response and growth

The inaugural ride attracted more participants than Thalley anticipated, encouraging him to envision a larger, recurring event. “All I want is to see a few more faces each year. I kind of want it to grow into something that people really want to be a part of,” he added.

Support from the Tony Bennett Foundation

The ride also received backing from the Tony Bennett Foundation, founded by Indianapolis philanthropist Tony Bennett after his son died by suicide. The foundation provides financial assistance to families affected by suicide, covering funeral expenses and offering counseling resources.

Resources for those in crisis

Attendees and community members were reminded that help is available at any time. Anyone struggling with thoughts of suicide or concerned about a loved one can call or text 988 to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a nationwide service offering confidential support.

Looking ahead

Organizers hope the ride will become an annual fixture on Indianapolis’ calendar, fostering ongoing dialogue about mental‑health awareness and encouraging residents to support one another. By combining a physical activity that promotes health with a compassionate message, the event underscores the city’s commitment to caring for its citizens and reducing the stigma surrounding mental‑health challenges.
