Sail Into the Golden Hour: An Evening Aboard the Jolly Rover

There are lighthouses, and then there is the Georgetown Lighthouse — the oldest lighthouse in South Carolina, standing at the mouth of Winyah Bay since 1812, perched on the northern tip of North Island like something out of a painting you once saw and never forgot. Getting there is half the pleasure, and making the trip out to North Island by private charter or guided skiff is the kind of afternoon that rewires how you think about time.

North Island sits at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and Winyah Bay, a few miles southeast of Georgetown’s historic waterfront. The island is part of the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center Heritage Preserve, which means it remains gloriously undeveloped — no concessions stands, no beach bars, no shuffle of foot traffic. Just wide, shell-strewn beaches, maritime forest, and the steady presence of that white lighthouse tower rising above the scrub palms. It is one of those rare places on the South Carolina coast where you can stand on a beach and genuinely feel like the first person to have done so in a good long while.

The lighthouse itself is not open for interior tours on a regular basis, but seeing it from the shore and the water is its own reward. Its history is extraordinary. The current structure replaced an earlier tower, and it has guided mariners through the tricky shallows of Winyah Bay for over two centuries. Blackbeard himself once prowled these waters. During the Civil War, Confederate forces darkened the light to confuse Union ships. Standing in its shadow, even from a respectful distance on the beach, you feel that history in a way no museum panel can fully replicate.

Charter fishing captains and private boat owners occasionally run passengers out to North Island for day excursions, and several Georgetown-based outfitters can arrange the logistics. The boat ride across the bay takes roughly twenty to thirty minutes depending on your departure point, and the passage through the marsh creeks and open bay water is worth the trip on its own. Brown pelicans follow your wake. Bottlenose dolphins are a routine presence in the bay, especially in warmer months. Oystercatchers pick along the oyster bars at low tide.

Pack a cooler with lunch, wear sunscreen, and bring good walking shoes because the beach terrain on the island’s ocean side can be soft and shell-heavy. Early morning and late afternoon light turns the whole scene amber and gold. Photographers will run out of storage before they run out of compositions.

North Island is not a polished attraction with a ticket booth and a gift shop. That is precisely the point. It is the real Lowcountry — wild, a little weather-beaten, utterly gorgeous, and anchored by one of the most historically significant lighthouses on the East Coast. If you make only one water excursion from Georgetown, let this be the one.
