As millions of businesses owned by baby boomers prepare for transition, a new wave of aspiring entrepreneurs is turning to Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) as a viable path to build generational wealth and community stability. This trend is particularly significant in the DMV area, where local business experts emphasize the need for a sustainable ecosystem that supports community leadership.
The Silver Tsunami
Dubbed the ‘Silver Tsunami,’ the impending transition of approximately 6 million baby boomer businesses by 2035 presents a unique opportunity. With 12 million jobs and $5 trillion in enterprise value at stake, many of these businesses lack a succession plan, creating a fertile ground for ETA. Tyrus Williams, an MBA student at Georgetown University, highlights the importance of such businesses, stating, “We need plumbers, and we need people to run plumbing businesses. And there’s a reason for being in ETA.”
Chris Weaver, executive director of Community Development Investors (CDI), stresses the importance of creating entrepreneurs who serve as community anchors. During CDI’s 2026 Annual Conference, stakeholders reinforced the vision of redefining business ownership with community impact at its core.
Empowering New Leaders
Keynote speaker Archie Jones emphasized the need to empower the next generation of leaders by removing barriers to social and financial capital. He pointed out that entrepreneurship is deeply ingrained in the community’s DNA, urging young leaders to view their resilience as an asset rather than a liability.
Denise Leonard, General Manager at Zelle, highlighted that ETA offers individuals the chance to redefine the American dream, focusing on financial security and flexibility rather than mere wealth accumulation.
Addressing Community Needs
Panelist Carrie Cook from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond noted the importance of addressing broader community needs, such as housing and healthcare, to ensure the success of entrepreneurial ventures. She emphasized that tackling these issues is crucial for creating a thriving and diverse business ecosystem.
As the nation faces this generational shift, the focus remains on education and initiative to capitalize on the opportunity. Jones concluded, “The USA needs us, needs you to solve this crisis, to capitalize on the opportunity.”
