Louisville area honors 25th anniversary of 9/11 with service projects and memorials

Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and communities throughout the Louisville region are turning remembrance into action. Governor Andy Beshear has ordered all Kentucky state office flags to fly at half‑staff and urged residents, businesses and faith groups to join the tribute.

Louisville

At the University of Louisville, students and staff will climb the stairs of L&N Stadium before 7 a.m. to honor the first responders who rushed to the scene that morning. By 9 a.m., hundreds of volunteers will gather at Churchill Downs for the nationwide “Honor Through Action” movement, packing more than 170,000 meals for donation to the Dare to Care Food Bank. Later, at 9:30 a.m., Mayor Craig Greenberg will stand with the city’s first responders on the steps of Metro Hall for a brief ceremony.

Fort Knox

The historic General George Patton Museum will host Fort Knox’s annual Patriot Day observance at 9 a.m. Retired Sgt. Maj. Tony Rose, whose office was directly above the point where Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, is slated to speak. The ceremony is open to the public.

Middletown

Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS will hold a wreath‑laying ceremony at Station 31 on Urton Lane at 8:46 a.m., the exact time the first plane hit the North Tower. Chief Pat Walsh and two Honor Guard members will read a tribute, lower their flag to half‑staff and lay a wreath for the victims.

Radcliff

The Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs will host a remembrance ceremony at 8:15 a.m. at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central. The site houses the state’s official 9/11 memorial. A department spokesperson said, “A quarter of a century may have passed, but we will never forget the lives lost and the heroism of first responders and citizens.”

Jeffersontown

At 9 a.m., a memorial will be held outside Station 51 on Watterson Trail. Mayor Carol Pike and other city officials are expected to attend and honor the fallen.

These coordinated events reflect a shared commitment among Kentucky’s cities and towns to remember the tragedy while serving the community, embodying the spirit of faith, family and liberty that defines the Louisville area.
