Attorney Kevin Reddington Challenges Jonathan Turley Over Holdout Juror Remarks

In a recent interview with Fox News correspondent Bryan Llenas, defense attorney Kevin Reddington pushed back against legal scholar Jonathan Turley’s condemnation of Reddington’s public comments about the single juror who refused to deliver a unanimous verdict in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.

Reddington calls Turley’s criticism “wrong”

When asked about Turley’s earlier remarks, Reddington said, “Well, I guess Jonathan Turley was wrong, wasn’t he? Based on what we now know about why this jury did not vote in accordance with the law, his accusations are unfounded.” He added that Turley should “check out the record before he makes his accusations” and reiterated that he found Turley’s comments “reprehensible.”

Turley’s ethical argument

Turley, a Fox News contributor and professor at George Washington University, has argued that attorneys have an ethical duty not to inflame public anger toward jurors who exercise independent judgment during deliberations. In a post on X, Turley wrote that he was surprised to learn Reddington had challenged him to a debate, and he questioned whether the professional duty of lawyers to protect jurors from public vilification had been breached.

Both sides cite the record

Reddington maintains that the holdout juror ignored the judge’s instructions and that subsequent information supports his criticism. He suggested that the juror’s stance may soon be clarified, saying, “Probably a matter of time before he’s interviewed somewhere and you can find out.” Llenas noted that the public still does not know the juror’s version of events.

Trial outcome and next steps

The Clancy trial ended in a mistrial after the jury deadlocked on whether Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible for the deaths of her three young children. Prosecutors have announced plans to retry her on the murder charges. Reddington indicated he is preparing a new motion to dismiss, signaling that the defense remains actively engaged as the case moves forward.

Legal community watches the dispute

The exchange highlights a broader conversation within the legal community about the balance between vigorous advocacy and the protection of jurors from public harassment. While Turley emphasizes the importance of preserving juror independence, Reddington argues that accountability for jurors who stray from judicial guidance is essential to the integrity of the trial process.

Both attorneys appear willing to continue the public dialogue, with Reddington inviting Turley to a debate and Turley indicating he will respond in due course. The dispute is likely to remain a point of focus as the retrial approaches.
