Southeast Portland Vintage Shop Faces Financial Strain After Vandalism and Burglary

Midtowners Market, a beloved vintage consignment shop in Southeast Portland, is facing significant financial challenges following two incidents of vandalism and burglary within a short span. The store, known for its role as a hub for local vendors, has been hit hard by these unfortunate events.

Impact on the Local Business

Megan Collins, the owner of Midtowners Market, expressed her dismay over the recent incidents. ‘I haven’t really had any issues until this year other than just minor theft coming in and out,’ Collins shared. The first incident involved broken windows, affecting not only her store but also neighboring businesses in the building. Just two weeks later, Collins received an early morning call from the police informing her that the store’s door had been broken into, and merchandise, displays, and her computer had been stolen.

The financial impact of these crimes is substantial. The cost of replacing the glass and the stolen items has put a strain on the business, which continues to meet its financial obligations to vendors and cover rent and other operational expenses. In response to these challenges, Collins has had to make difficult decisions, such as canceling the store’s internet, phone line, and automated services to cut costs.

Community Response and Support

Despite the setbacks, the community has shown support for Midtowners Market. Neighbors have turned the boarded-up windows into murals, adding messages of positivity to uplift the spirits of those affected. Collins has also set up a GoFundMe page to help offset the costs, but she emphasizes that the best way to support the store is by visiting and shopping there.

‘We’re a small business and we’re trying to do everything we can to support our community, we just need the community support in turn right now after everything,’ Collins said, highlighting the reciprocal relationship between local businesses and the community.
