Rancho Cucamonga Teen Sets Record at National Spelling Bee

In an impressive display of skill and composure, 14-year-old Shray Parekh from Rancho Cucamonga has claimed the title of the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion. The Day Creek Intermediate School eighth-grader achieved this feat by setting a new record in the competition’s lightning-round finale, where he correctly spelled 32 words in just 90 seconds. This remarkable performance surpassed the previous record of 29 words set in 2024, securing Shray’s place in spelling bee history.

Family Support and Community Pride

Shray’s journey to the national stage was supported by his parents, Gaurav and Khyati Parekh, who accompanied him to Washington, D.C., for the prestigious event. Gaurav Parekh expressed unwavering confidence in his son’s abilities, stating, “I had full confidence in him and his preparation that it will take him through.” Meanwhile, Khyati Parekh admitted to feeling nervous during the final round, describing the experience as “nerve-racking.”

Back home, the community of Rancho Cucamonga and school officials from Day Creek Intermediate showed their support and pride in Shray’s accomplishments. Ted Alejandre, superintendent of the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, noted Shray’s calm demeanor and excitement about the competition, saying, “All of us are so proud and excited for him, his family, certainly all his classmates there at Day Creek Intermediate, because Shray represents the best of the best in San Bernardino County.”

A Journey Fueled by Curiosity and Determination

Shray’s interest in competitive spelling was sparked by his love for reading and the enticing rewards associated with advancing in the competition. He recalled, “My teacher just showed us the hotel we got to go to if we made it to nationals. It looked really cool and fun, so I just did it.” This simple motivation led him to pursue spelling bees, ultimately culminating in his record-breaking performance and national championship victory.

As Shray Parekh returns to Rancho Cucamonga with his well-deserved title, he serves as an inspiration to his peers and a testament to the power of dedication and community support. His achievement not only highlights individual excellence but also brings pride to his family, school, and the broader community.
