McKinney Residents Launch Recall Effort Against Mayor and Council Members

U.S. Rep. Keith Self commended McKinney residents for taking action to recall Mayor Bill Cox and three city council members. In a recent “Let’s Talk Local” interview, Self said the citizens “had enough” of officials who, in their view, ignored community concerns.

Recall petition details

The initiating affidavit names Mayor Cox, At‑Large Council Member Ernest Lynch, District 3 Council Member Geré Feltus and District 1 Council Member Justin Beller. The petition alleges a loss of public confidence in their ability to faithfully represent McKinney citizens. To move forward, organizers must gather 5,805 valid signatures from registered voters by 5 p.m. on September 26.

Issues driving the campaign

Self highlighted several grievances fueling the recall drive, including the city’s handling of the McKinney Islamic Association’s revised site plan, which the council approved unanimously, and ongoing frustration with McKinney National Airport. Voters rejected a $200 million airport bond in May 2023, and officials later pursued a smaller terminal using alternative financing.

Self also criticized former Mayor George Fuller, likening his continued influence to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and called Fuller “the leader of the opposition.” Fuller responded that while he opposes threats or retaliation against petition signers, public criticism is a normal part of the political process.

Community response

Some residents have expressed concern over potential intimidation of petition signers. An August report noted a TikTok video urging opponents to submit fake volunteer sign‑ups and pressure businesses that host petition activities, though no direct link to Fuller was established.

The recall effort underscores a broader debate in McKinney over growth, infrastructure, and whether elected officials are truly listening to their constituents.
