Texas Reps Talarico and Wu Face Backlash Over Controversial Statements

State Representatives James Talarico (D-Round Rock) and Gene Wu (D-Houston) recently joined forces on the campaign trail in Houston, sparking renewed controversy over their past statements on race and diversity. The joint appearance on May 19 was confirmed by a post on Wu’s official X account, but it quickly became overshadowed by resurfaced comments made by both politicians.

Controversial Statements Resurface

Gene Wu faced backlash after a video clip, shared by the X user EndWokeness, showed him describing white people as “oppressors” and suggesting that “non-whites” could “take over this country.” This statement has drawn criticism from various quarters, highlighting the divisive nature of racial discourse in politics.

James Talarico, on the other hand, has a history of making provocative statements on social media. In May 2020, he compared racism to a contagious virus, suggesting that white skin provides immunity that allows racism to spread unnoticed. He urged people to support the Black Lives Matter movement as a step toward addressing systemic issues.

In another instance, Talarico questioned public reactions to racial incidents by posing a hypothetical scenario involving George Floyd and a “blonde salon owner,” linking it to his efforts to dismantle “white supremacy” and “institutional racism.” His comments have been criticized for their inflammatory nature.

Legislative Proposals and Criticism

Talarico has also been vocal about the need for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) instruction in Texas schools. In March 2021, he proposed legislation requiring DEI officers in every Texas school, citing concerns about the radicalization of young white men through platforms like YouTube.

Despite the backlash, Talarico has not distanced himself from his past statements or from Wu. In a recent interview with ABC News Live, he acknowledged some of his comments as “cringey” but deflected criticism by accusing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton of using distraction tactics to divert attention from his own controversies.

Paxton, in turn, has used Talarico’s words in a campaign ad, framing him as a threat to Texas values. The ad underscores the ongoing political tensions and the role of past statements in shaping public perception.
