Overnight storms dump tree branches on Des Moines homes and streets

Early Thursday morning, a sudden thunderstorm rolled through Des Moines, bringing strong winds that toppled trees and scattered branches across the 11th Street and Carpenter Avenue area. By 7:30 a.m., neighbors were gathering outside to assess the damage, noting that yards, roadways and even portions of roofs were littered with debris.

Residents describe the scene

Consuelo Salas, who lives in one of the affected homes, said the sight was “pure shock.” She explained that the cleanup will be “more crazy, especially the roads,” as crews work to clear the tangled mess. Salas and her daughter Yaretzi recalled that they have not seen damage of this magnitude in years.

“She looked out the window, and she said a brick fell first, and she was looking and was like, Mom, a tree is falling!” Salas recounted, describing the moment her daughter realized the danger. Yaretzi, who was in her bedroom at the time, added, “I was like, my stuffed animals!” Salas quickly moved her daughter away from the window, urging her to stay in the middle of the house until the storm passed.

Neighbors take shelter

Across the street, Teaghun Birchard said the storm hit so fast that he and his family retreated to the basement for safety. “We were scared, we were hiding in the basement,” Birchard said, adding that he will pray for those affected by the sudden weather event.

Many residents expressed gratitude for small actions that helped them avoid greater harm. Salas noted that she had moved her car out of the driveway before the trees fell, a decision she believes prevented a potential collision with a school bus that might have struggled to navigate the blocked road.

Cleanup and city response

The City of Des Moines public works department has been dispatched to the affected streets to begin clearing fallen branches and assessing any damage to utility lines. Crews are expected to prioritize main thoroughfares to restore safe travel for commuters and emergency vehicles.

Residents are encouraged to report any downed power lines or hazardous debris to the city’s 311 service. The department also advises motorists to exercise caution, follow posted detour signs, and allow extra travel time while cleanup efforts continue.

Looking ahead

While the storm was an isolated event, city officials remind citizens that Iowa’s spring and early‑summer weather can bring sudden, severe thunderstorms. They recommend that homeowners keep trees trimmed and maintain clear access to driveways and sidewalks to reduce the risk of damage in future storms.

Community groups have already begun organizing volunteer clean‑up efforts, offering tools and assistance to neighbors who may need help removing debris from their properties. As the neighborhood works together to restore normalcy, the shared experience underscores the importance of neighborly support during unexpected weather challenges.
