Springfield Foundation Seeks Community Support for Classroom Grants

The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools has kicked off its annual Grant SPS campaign, setting an ambitious goal of raising $300,000 by August 31. This initiative is designed to directly benefit teachers and their classrooms by funding innovative projects that address critical needs.

Community Involvement

Jennifer Sickinger, the foundation’s development director, emphasized the importance of community support in reaching this goal. Last year, the foundation was able to award $300,000 in grants, although the requests totaled more than $650,000. Sickinger highlighted that while large donations from sponsors are crucial, smaller contributions from community members can collectively make a significant impact.

“If we had multiple members of the community give us $10 each, it’s really going to help reach our goal,” Sickinger said. “It doesn’t have to be a big gift. Those small community donations will help us say yes to those grants.”

Impactful Projects

The grant program encourages educators to develop projects that enhance student learning and engagement. Past projects have tackled issues such as student mental health, literacy, hands-on learning opportunities, and family engagement. One notable initiative funded last year was the Making Each Day Count program at Wanda Gray Elementary, which significantly improved student attendance rates.

The program replaced smaller quarterly incentives with a large end-of-year celebration, featuring activities like inflatables and water slides. This approach resulted in the school achieving its highest attendance marks ever, with a 90/90 rate of 92.2%, and also led to improved performance on state tests.
