Gage County Sheriff alerts residents after scammer faked warrant for $9,000

Beatrice, Neb. – The Gage County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) warned the community on Friday after a resident reported a sophisticated scam that attempted to extract $9,000 under the pretense of a fake warrant. The caller claimed the victim had missed jury duty, that a warrant had been issued, and that a “gag order” prohibited the victim from discussing the matter.

How the scam unfolded

According to GCSO investigators, the fraudster called the Beatrice resident, using personal details such as the victim’s Social Security number and vehicle information to lend credibility to the ruse. The caller instructed the victim to either turn himself in to authorities or travel to a CVS Pharmacy in Lincoln to deliver the $9,000 bond payment directly to the scammer.

In addition to demanding money, the impostor warned the victim that a “gag order” was in effect, implying that any attempt to disclose the situation would result in legal consequences. This intimidation tactic is a common element in scams that seek to silence victims before they can verify the claim.

Victim seeks verification, avoids loss

Rather than complying, the resident drove to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to confirm whether a warrant truly existed. Sheriff’s staff quickly identified the call as a fraud, confirming that no warrant had been issued and that the alleged gag order was fabricated. The prompt verification saved the victim from losing $9,000 and highlighted the importance of contacting official law‑enforcement channels when faced with unexpected legal threats.

Sheriff’s Office response and public‑safety advice

GCSO spokesperson Deputy Sheriff Mark Jensen emphasized that legitimate law‑enforcement agencies never demand money over the phone, nor do they impose gag orders that prevent citizens from discussing investigations. “If you ever receive a call that asks for money or threatens you with legal action unless you comply, you should hang up and call your local sheriff’s office or police department directly,” Jensen said.

The department also reminded residents that jury‑duty notices are typically mailed and that any legitimate court summons will include clear instructions on how to respond. Citizens are encouraged to verify any unexpected legal claims by contacting the court clerk or the appropriate law‑enforcement agency.

Broader context of phone scams

Phone‑based scams have risen nationwide, often exploiting personal data obtained from data‑broker services or previous data breaches. While many scams target seniors or small‑business owners, this incident shows that residents of all ages can be vulnerable. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports that fraud losses from phone scams have increased sharply over the past few years, prompting law‑enforcement agencies to issue regular alerts.

GCSO is working with the Nebraska State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to trace the origin of the call and to pursue any leads that could result in an arrest. In the meantime, the department urges the public to remain vigilant, protect personal information, and report suspicious calls promptly.

What you can do

  • Never share personal identifiers such as Social Security numbers or vehicle details with unsolicited callers.
  • Do not send money or provide financial information unless you have independently verified the request through official channels.
  • If a caller claims you are under a gag order or threatens legal action, contact your local sheriff’s office or police department immediately.
  • Report suspected scams to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov and to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

By staying informed and verifying claims, residents can protect themselves and help keep the community safe from fraudsters seeking to exploit fear and confusion.
