Boston jurors recount seven‑day deliberations in Lindsay Clancy trial

Boston – In an exclusive interview with NBC10 Boston, three members of the jury that heard former labor‑and‑delivery nurse Lindsay Clancy describe the intense seven‑day deliberations that ended without a unanimous verdict. The jurors – foreperson Roni Carlson, chef Kellie Farina and defense‑contract employee Paula Devlin – explained how they examined the evidence, debated the legal standards and ultimately faced a single holdout juror who refused to find Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity.

Deliberations were far from a simple vote

According to Carlson, the foreperson and former elementary‑school teacher, the group never reached an 11‑1 vote. “There actually was a split in different ways,” she said. The jurors considered three separate charges – first‑degree murder, second‑degree murder and manslaughter – and spent hours organizing evidence, asking questions and listening to each other.

“They looked at so much evidence. They made sure they organized it, they asked questions and they also made sure they listened to each other and made arguments to each other,” Carlson added. “They took this very seriously, and in the end they really did feel like they failed.”

Holdout juror refused to apply reasonable doubt

At one point, Carlson believed the group might have persuaded the holdout juror to vote for an acquittal. “He had reasonable doubt. He admitted he had reasonable doubt and I started filling out the forms, I was so excited,” she recalled. However, the juror later insisted, “But I’m still not going to say that she’s not guilty by reason of insanity.” The judge’s records show the jurors sent multiple notes indicating they could not reach a unanimous decision.

Devlin, who works for a defense contractor, described the holdout juror as “arrogant” and said he “did not take anything that anybody said” and completely disregarded the information presented by his peers.

Jurors’ view of the case and the victims

Clancy, 36, never disputed that she killed her three children. Her attorney argued she suffered from postpartum psychosis, a rare mental illness linked to the stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes that follow childbirth. Prosecutors maintained that Clancy acted deliberately, strangling 5‑year‑old Cora, 3‑year‑old Dawson and 8‑month‑old Callan with exercise bands while sending her husband out of the house.

Carlson highlighted evidence that suggested Clancy loved her children, pointing to journals and testimony from her former mother‑in‑law who described her as a nurturing mother. “So she had to have snapped and not known what she was doing,” Carlson said. Farina, a senior‑center chef, criticized the prosecution for lacking compassion, calling their approach “very, very harsh.”

Emotional impact on the jury

The jurors also heard the 911 call made by Clancy’s husband when he discovered the children. Farina described it as “the most horrific thing” and said the jury replayed the call multiple times, leading many to cry. “It’s something that I will never not hear if I think about it,” she said.

Legal analyst Michael Coyne noted the unusual speed with which the jurors spoke publicly, saying, “Usually you’d think they’d want a little time to sort of detox, to take a step back and try and think about the case and think about what their role was. But obviously they have a voice here that they want heard.” He praised the jurors as “intelligent, thoughtful and committed” to doing their civic duty.

Next steps

The judge has temporarily sealed the jurors’ names, and the holdout juror has not yet provided a public account of his reasoning. NBC10 Boston has attempted to contact that juror for comment. The case remains pending as the court determines how to proceed without a unanimous verdict.
