BridgeDetroit launches fall fundraiser to keep classroom and neighborhood journalism alive

Detroit – As students head back to school and neighborhoods stir with new conversations, BridgeDetroit is stepping back into classrooms and porches across the city with a clear mission: to listen, report, and keep its journalism free for all Detroitiers.

Engaging students and residents

Engagement Editor Bryce Huffman, a former Detroit classroom teacher, is leading the effort. He will visit schools where he once taught, helping young people learn how journalism works, how local government decisions are made, and how to locate trustworthy information about their city.

Beyond the classroom, BridgeDetroit’s “Porchside” program brings journalists to community spaces – porches, parks, and other gathering spots – to hear directly from residents about what’s happening in their neighborhoods and what questions they need answered.

From conversation to story

BridgeDetroit staff treat every conversation as the seed of a story. A student might wonder how city council votes affect their street, while a resident could share a change in a local park. Journalists then contact public officials, examine records, verify facts, and ask follow‑up questions to turn those conversations into investigations, explainers, or news articles.

This approach ensures that community engagement is not a separate activity but an integral part of the newsroom’s work, strengthening the quality and relevance of its reporting.

Fundraising goal

To keep this model alive, BridgeDetroit is launching a fall fundraising campaign with a target of $7,500. Contributions from readers will cover the time and resources needed for Porchside gatherings, classroom visits, relationship‑building in Detroit neighborhoods, and the reporting that follows.

The organization emphasizes that its journalism remains free to read. No Detroiter needs a subscription, a credit card, or any payment to learn about City Hall decisions, school district updates, or neighborhood changes.

Why support matters

Free, independent journalism is essential for a healthy community. By supporting BridgeDetroit, readers help ensure that local voices are heard, that public officials are held accountable, and that accurate information is available to families, faith communities, and individuals seeking to make informed choices.

BridgeDetroit invites anyone who believes in the power of conversation‑driven reporting to contribute. “When Detroiters talk, we want to be there to listen,” the campaign states, underscoring the nonprofit’s commitment to serving the city’s informational needs.
