Eagle County deputy kills bear that charged near Eagle‑Vail apartments

On the evening of Aug. 24, an Eagle County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) deputy was forced to use lethal force when a bear charged at him outside an apartment complex in Eagle‑Vail, Colorado. The incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. after a crowd of roughly 40 onlookers had gathered near a sow and her cubs, recording the wildlife on their phones.

Deputy response and escalation

Deputies arrived to find the bear family lingering near the laundry room of the complex, a location that had been the site of a bear attack just days earlier that left a man injured. ECSO officers first attempted to disperse the crowd and to haze the bears away from the building. Body‑worn camera footage shows officers shouting commands at the animals, followed by the discharge of a non‑lethal round when the bears did not retreat.

While the officers were yelling, the sow suddenly charged the deputy. In that moment the deputy fired several shots, killing the bear. The swift action prevented the animal from potentially harming the officer or nearby residents.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife response

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) arrived on scene at approximately 8:50 p.m. The agency took the two cubs to a rehabilitation facility, where they will receive care until they are ready to return to the wild.

Official statements and community guidance

ECSO released a statement expressing that the department is “heartbroken” over the loss of the bear but emphasized the necessity of protecting public safety. The agency reminded Eagle County residents that bears remain active as they prepare for hibernation and urged people to give wildlife ample space, avoid feeding bears, and secure garbage to reduce attractants.

Local officials also noted that the recent bear activity underscores the importance of continued cooperation between law‑enforcement and wildlife agencies. By acting quickly and responsibly, the deputy helped avert a potentially dangerous encounter while CPW ensured the cubs receive professional care.

What residents can do

  • Keep a safe distance from any bear sighting, especially during the pre‑hibernation period.
  • Secure trash, pet food, and other attractants that might draw bears to residential areas.
  • Report bear sightings promptly to ECSO or CPW to allow a coordinated response.
  • Educate family members, especially children, about bear safety and the importance of not approaching wildlife.

The incident serves as a reminder that while Colorado’s wildlife is a treasured part of the state’s natural heritage, responsible coexistence requires vigilance and respect for both human safety and animal well‑being.
