Contigo Is Gone, Justine’s Is Booked — Pull Up a Blanket at Barton Hills’ Most Beloved Backyard: Lenoir… Actually, Let’s Talk About Contigo’s Spiritual Twin, the Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co.

There is a moment, usually around 6 p.m. on a Friday, when the last pink light of a Texas sunset catches the pecan trees on the back patio of the Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. — and you stop whatever conversation you were having and just breathe it in. This is the ABGB (South Lamar corridor, for the uninitiated), and if you have not yet made it here, consider this your formal, enthusiastic invitation.

Tucked along South Lamar Boulevard in Austin’s beloved 78704 zip code, the ABGB opened in 2013 and has quietly become one of the city’s most cherished institutions. The building itself is a converted warehouse — high ceilings, industrial bones softened by warm wood, string lights, and the kind of low-key décor that says “we put all our energy into what’s in the glass.” Step inside and the first thing you notice is the gleaming brewery tanks visible behind the bar. These folks brew on-site, and they take it seriously.

The beers are the main event and they earn every ounce of the praise heaped on them. The Rocket 100 Lager has become something of a local legend — crisp, clean, and dangerously easy to drink in the Texas heat. The Heaven & Hell schwarzbier is dark and smooth without being heavy, a genuinely elegant pour. Seasonal releases rotate on chalkboard, and the staff can talk you through all of it without a trace of snobbery. Order a flight if you can’t decide. You won’t regret it.

But the ABGB is not only a brewery — it’s a full pizzeria, and a very good one. The thin-crust pies come out of a proper oven and hit that sweet spot between crispy and chewy that so many Austin spots miss entirely. The pepperoni cup pie has its loyalists. The margherita will make you question why you ever ordered delivery. Grab a pie for the table, get a round of lagers, and suddenly two hours have vanished and you don’t mind at all.

What really sets this place apart is the live music. Almost every Friday and Saturday evening, a band sets up in the main hall or on the patio and plays while the crowd eats, drinks, and lingers. It is not a concert experience in the formal sense — you are not buying a ticket, pressing to the front, or craning your neck. You are simply absorbing great live sound as the background to a perfect Austin evening. Country, Americana, rock, blues — the booking is eclectic and consistently high quality.

The patio, shaded by mature trees and strung with lights, is the place to be when the weather cooperates, which in Austin is much of the year. Families, couples, dogs on leashes, groups of friends celebrating birthdays or nothing in particular — the ABGB draws an entirely unpretentious crowd. You will feel welcome here whether you are a craft beer obsessive or someone who just learned what a lager was ten minutes ago.

Parking is easier than most South Lamar spots, and the place accommodates walk-ins graciously, though arriving early on weekend evenings is wise if you want a table with room. Go before sunset, order a round, get a pizza, and stay for the music. That is the full ABGB experience, and once you have had it, you will find yourself going back with suspicious regularity.

Austin rewards its visitors who wander just slightly off the marquee path — and the ABGB is exactly the kind of genuinely local, genuinely excellent place that makes this city so endlessly worth exploring.
