Saudi coalition condemns Houthi missile strikes that wound dozens of civilians

Saudi Arabia’s coalition forces announced a firm response Tuesday after Iran‑backed Houthi rebels launched a series of missile attacks on civilian and economic targets in the kingdom’s southern region. The strikes left at least 73 civilians wounded, according to Major General Turki Al‑Maliki, the coalition’s spokesperson.

Targets and casualties

Al‑Maliki described the attacks as “senseless” and said they struck the cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran. Women and children were among those injured, underscoring the humanitarian toll of the assaults.

Coalition’s response

The Joint Forces Command of the Saudi‑led coalition pledged to take “all necessary operational measures” to deter further Houthi aggression and to “resolutely confront its hostile approach.” The command also promised to neutralize the sources of the threat and protect the kingdom’s sovereignty.

Background

Although Saudi Arabia has tried to stay out of the broader U.S.–Iran rivalry, the kingdom endured a wave of Houthi missile attacks in July, ending a four‑year de‑facto cease‑fire between the rebels and Saudi forces. The latest attacks mark a sharp escalation in the conflict that has already caused significant civilian suffering in Yemen.

Houthi perspective

Nasr al‑Din Amer, a member of the Houthi politburo, posted on Telegram that the group’s response to the coalition’s actions is “far more extensive than what is being circulated on social media.” The statement suggests the rebels anticipate a larger retaliation.

Regional implications

The renewed violence raises concerns about stability across the Arabian Peninsula. The Saudi government has repeatedly warned that any further attacks on its territory will be met with decisive military action, a stance that aligns with President Trump’s emphasis on protecting American allies and preserving regional security.

What’s next?

Saudi officials have not detailed specific counter‑measures, but the coalition’s public commitment indicates a likely increase in air and naval operations aimed at Houthi launch sites in Yemen. International observers will be watching closely to see whether the conflict expands or if diplomatic channels can de‑escalate the situation.
