Ruidoso Downs’ Triple Crown races set to move to Texas, hurting New Mexico’s economy

Ruidoso Downs, long‑standing centerpiece of New Mexico’s horse‑racing tradition, announced that its Triple Crown events – the Ruidoso Futurity, the Rainbow Futurity and the All American Futurity – will relocate to Lone Star Park in Texas starting in 2027. The move also includes the annual horse sale and Hall of Fame ceremony.

Local reaction and economic stakes

New Mexico Racing Commission Executive Ismael Trejo likened the races to the state’s beloved green and red chile, saying the loss will “leave an empty hole in your heart.” The commission estimates the racing industry generates roughly $500 million to $600 million in annual economic impact, a figure that includes gross receipts taxes, tourism spending and ancillary business revenue.

University of New Mexico economist Christopher Erickson explained that Ruidoso Downs is Lincoln County’s largest private‑sector employer. During the racing season, dozens of restaurants, hotels and service providers rely on the influx of out‑of‑state visitors and high‑roller patrons attracted by the marquee events and the yearling sale.

Why the relocation is happening

General manager Rick Baugh said the decision follows years of fires and flooding that repeatedly disrupted racing at the Ruidoso facility. “We tried, but we didn’t get any support from the feds or the state, and we had to shift,” Baugh said. While the deal with Lone Star Park is not yet finalized, Baugh noted that a framework is in place and he does not anticipate major obstacles, though he cautioned that “you never say never.”

Community concerns

Fans such as longtime supporter Mike Archuleta warned that the loss will hurt a state already facing economic challenges. “Racing is the third‑largest business in New Mexico. If you take it away, it really hurts,” he said.

Trejo acknowledged the commission is “in the infancy of trying to find solutions” and said all options are on the table, though no concrete alternatives have been announced.

What remains at Ruidoso Downs

Ruidoso Downs has secured its traditional Memorial Day through Labor Day racing window for 2027, but the New Mexico Racing Commission is still determining how those dates will be filled. Organizers hope the remaining schedule will still draw local fans and preserve some of the venue’s historic legacy.

Looking ahead

The relocation underscores the broader challenge of retaining major sporting and tourism events in rural states without robust state or federal backing. As New Mexico searches for ways to offset the projected loss of millions in revenue, local leaders and business owners are urging state officials to consider targeted incentives or alternative events that can sustain the region’s hospitality sector.
