Volusia County teen identified after fatal UTV crash on Pell Road

Haylee Bechtold, a 15‑year‑old resident of Osteen in Volusia County, has been identified as the victim of a fatal UTV crash that occurred on Pell Road shortly after noon on September 7, 2026. The incident, which also involved a 13‑year‑old passenger, drew a swift response from Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and local emergency services.

Details of the crash

According to troopers, the Honda UTV was traveling southbound on Pell Road, near the intersection with Ashby Way, when the teen lost control of the vehicle. The UTV overturned onto its left side, and investigators noted that the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. First responders pronounced Haylee dead at the scene. The 13‑year‑old passenger was transported by family members to Lake Monroe Hospital, where doctors determined the injuries were not life‑threatening.

Family’s tribute

In a heartfelt statement to WESH 2, Haylee’s family described her love for animals and baking. “She loved all animals. She had a dog named Casper (he is the size of a horse), cat, bearded dragon, pygmy snake, rabbits, chickens and ducks,” the family wrote. They added that a memorial at the crash site was created by her horse trainer and that Haylee’s passion for baking lived on through her seven sourdough starters and freeze‑dried candies, which she sold under the name Puffs Creations LLC at the Osteen Farmers Market.

Community response

The tragedy has resonated deeply within the Osteen and broader Volusia County community. Neighbors, friends, and local businesses have expressed their condolences and offered support to the grieving family. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with funeral expenses and to help the family during this difficult time. Those wishing to contribute can do so through the link provided in the original news report.

Safety reminder

While the investigation continues, law‑enforcement officials remind UTV riders of the importance of wearing proper protective gear, especially helmets, and of operating these vehicles responsibly on public roadways. The incident underscores the need for heightened awareness among young riders and their families.

Ongoing investigation

The Florida Highway Patrol will continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including vehicle condition and road factors. No further details have been released at this time.

Our thoughts remain with Haylee’s family, friends, and the entire Osteen community as they mourn the loss of a vibrant young life.
