Five FDNY firefighters treated for minor injuries after Coney Island auto body shop fire

On Tuesday morning, a fire erupted just after 9:30 a.m. at a one‑story auto body shop located at 3088 Cropsey Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The blaze quickly escalated to a two‑alarm incident, prompting the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) to dispatch more than 45 fire units and over 140 firefighters and EMS personnel to contain the flames.

Rapid FDFDNY response protects the neighborhood

FDNY crews arrived within minutes, establishing a defensive line to protect nearby homes and businesses. By 10:15 a.m., the fire was placed under control, preventing further spread to the densely populated streets of Coney Island. The swift action underscores the department’s commitment to safeguarding the community and maintaining public safety in one of New York City’s most historic neighborhoods.

Firefighters receive medical care

During the operation, five firefighters sustained minor injuries and were transported by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health. Hospital staff confirmed that all injuries were non‑life‑threatening, and the firefighters are expected to make a full recovery and return to duty soon.

Investigation underway

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the FDNY’s Bureau of Fire Investigation. Officials have not released any details about the origin of the blaze, but they emphasized that a thorough review will be conducted to determine any contributing factors and to prevent future incidents.

Community impact and safety reminders

While the fire caused temporary disruption, nearby residents reported no loss of power or water service. Local businesses resumed normal operations later in the day, and traffic returned to usual flow after the fire lanes were cleared.

FDNY officials used the incident as an opportunity to remind Coney Island residents and business owners about fire safety best practices. They urged property owners to maintain clear access for emergency vehicles, ensure fire extinguishers are inspected regularly, and conduct routine safety drills with staff.

Looking ahead

The FDNY continues to monitor the site for any lingering hazards and will work with the shop’s owners to address any safety concerns uncovered during the investigation. The department’s dedication to rapid response and community outreach remains a cornerstone of its mission to protect New Yorkers.
