Sweden’s ruling bloc narrows gap with centre-left as Liberals clear 4% threshold

Sweden’s upcoming general election has become far more competitive, according to the latest opinion poll released by Novus and broadcast by TV4. The poll, conducted between September 1 and September 5 among 2,888 respondents, shows the ruling right‑wing bloc narrowing the gap with the centre‑left opposition.

Poll numbers show a tighter race

The survey indicates that the four centre‑left parties – led by Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson – hold 50.3% of voter intention, while Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s three‑party government, supported by the anti‑immigration Sweden Democrats, stands at 47.9%. The margin between the two blocs has shrunk by 0.2 percentage points since Novus’ previous poll.

Liberals break the 4% barrier

Most notably, the junior coalition partner, the Liberals, rose to 4.3% from 3.3%, clearing the parliamentary threshold needed to win seats. This development eases concerns that the party could lose its 16 seats and jeopardize the coalition’s majority in the Riksdag.

Context of the shifting dynamics

Earlier polls had suggested a comfortable lead for the centre‑left, with a separate poll three weeks earlier showing a 10‑point advantage – a gap many political scientists described as near‑insurmountable before election day. The new Novus figures suggest that the Kristersson government remains a viable contender, despite the presence of the Sweden Democrats, whose anti‑immigration stance has been a point of contention in Swedish politics.

What this means for voters

Swedish voters now face a more nuanced decision. The right‑wing bloc’s ability to maintain its coalition hinges on the Liberals’ performance, while the centre‑left must defend its lead amid a rallying of the governing parties. Both blocs will likely intensify their campaign messages in the final weeks before the September 11 election.

Looking ahead

With the election only a few days away, parties are expected to focus on key issues such as immigration policy, economic stability, and public safety. The outcome will determine whether the current government can continue its agenda or if the centre‑left will reclaim power after a four‑year term.

Novus’ methodology involved a random sample of voters across Sweden, with a margin of error typical for polls of this size. As the race tightens, further polling will be essential to gauge whether the trends observed in this latest survey hold steady through election day.
