Diocese of Palm Beach Removes Rev. Alex Vargas Pending Canonical Review

The Diocese of Palm Beach issued an update on September 5 regarding Reverend Alex J. Vargas, the pastor of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Boynton Beach. After a thorough, independent review conducted by Renaissance Associates, Ltd., a New York‑based law firm, the diocese concluded that there is not enough information to confirm the allegation that Vargas sexually abused a minor.

Findings on Other Allegations

While the sexual‑abuse claim could not be substantiated, the investigation did find sufficient evidence to support allegations of sexual misconduct, abuse of power and authority, financial improprieties, and violations of the diocesan code of conduct. Those violations include inappropriate sexual contact, harassment, conflicts of interest, and failures in administrative responsibilities.

Immediate Actions Taken

Following the investigation, Most Reverend Manuel de Jesús Rodríguez, Bishop of the Diocese of Palm Beach, issued a letter declaring Reverend Vargas “deemed unsuitable for ministry.” The bishop removed Vargas from all ministerial duties and appointed Very Reverend Antony Pulikal as the interim parish administrator for St. Thomas More.

Vargas will be given the opportunity to participate in a canonical judicial process, a church‑law proceeding that will determine any further ecclesiastical consequences. The bishop’s letter emphasizes that this removal is not a legal finding of guilt; under both civil and canon law, Reverend Vargas remains innocent until proven guilty.

Support for the Faithful

To aid parishioners during this difficult time, the Diocese’s Healing Intervention Team was made available at Mass on September 5 and September 6. The team offered a compassionate space for conversation, prayer, and healing, underscoring the diocese’s commitment to pastoral care and the well‑being of its community.

Background and Timeline

The diocese first learned of the serious allegations on June 17, prompting an immediate administrative leave for Vargas. At that time, the diocese also notified local law‑enforcement agencies, including the Boynton Beach Police Department and the State Attorney’s Office for Palm Beach County. Since then, the independent investigation has been completed, and the diocese has communicated its findings to the public.

Next Steps

Reverend Vargas’ future within the Church will be determined through the canonical process, which allows him to present his side of the story and seek reconciliation if appropriate. The diocese has pledged transparency throughout the proceedings and will keep the faithful informed of any further developments.

For those seeking additional information, the full letter from Bishop Rodríguez is available on the Diocese of Palm Beach website.
