Marquette Golden Eagles dominate Northwestern in 3-1 home victory

In a strong showing for Milwaukee’s own Marquette University, the Golden Eagles men’s soccer team defeated Northwestern 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields. The win lifts Marquette to a 3-1-1 record early in the season and underscores the team’s ability to capitalize on limited chances.

Early lead set the tone

Marquette opened the scoring in the 34th minute on its very first shot of the match. Junior forward Mads Konrad Horgøien delivered a sliding finish from a feed by teammate Hudson Torrez, marking Horgøien’s third goal of the year. Although the Wildcats outshot the Eagles 6-1 in the first half, the early goal proved decisive at the break.

Second‑half surge extends the lead

Just sixty seconds into the second half, Marquette doubled its advantage. After Horgøien’s shot was blocked, he recovered the rebound and sent a precise pass to Torrez, who was waiting at the back post for an easy tap‑in.

Northwestern responded quickly, narrowing the gap to one goal in the 61st minute when senior forward Italo Addimandi found the net. The Wildcats pressed hard, and a dangerous cross left Andrew Millar wide open at the six‑yard line, forcing Marquette goalkeeper Cameron Simpson to make a point‑blank save with his right arm fully extended.

Late goal seals the win

Marquette restored a two‑goal cushion in the 83rd minute. Defender Gabe Watkins cleared a dangerous ball, which ricocheted to freshman forward Tomiwa Adewumi. After a quick dribble, Adewumi cut inside and fired a powerful shot to the far post, beating the keeper and cementing the 3-1 final score.

Despite being outshot 13‑4 overall, the Golden Eagles were clinical, converting three of their four attempts on target. Simpson recorded two saves, and the team’s efficient finishing helped secure its third victory of the season.

Looking ahead

Marquette continues its three‑match home stretch next week, with upcoming games against St. Thomas on September 9 and Southern Indiana on September 12. The team will aim to build on its strong defensive performance and maintain its scoring efficiency as the season progresses.

Fans and alumni are encouraged to attend the upcoming matches at Valley Fields, supporting the university’s commitment to athletic excellence and community spirit.
