UTSA Roadrunners dominate UTRGV Vaqueros in first FBS matchup at Alamodome

San Antonio – On Saturday afternoon the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners delivered a decisive 45-16 victory over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros at the Alamodome. The win marked the Vaqueros’ first ever contest against a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent, a milestone for the program that launched only a year ago.

Game recap

UTSA, now 1-0 on the season, took control early and never looked back. The Roadrunners’ offense moved the ball efficiently, scoring multiple touchdowns while limiting the Vaqueros to just two field goals and a lone touchdown. UTRGV, which debuted its football program in 2025 and currently competes in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Southland Conference, struggled to match the speed and depth of the FBS squad.

Following the win, UTSA will travel to San Marcos to face longtime rival Texas State, while the Vaqueros continue their road trip with a 6 p.m. game against Nicholls next Saturday.

Student involvement and community pride

UTRGV organized a trip for 100 of its students to attend the game, a group that sold out before the school year began, according to local station KRGV. Sophomore Alexa Carreon described the experience as her first visit to the iconic dome and her first away game, saying, “I have never seen the dome, and I am excited to go see it. It’s different from home, and I’m looking forward to the new scenery.”

Activities director Edna Zambrano highlighted the broader significance of the event, noting that the game offers a chance for South Texas to come together. “There’s a lot of excitement around the program, and our students are thrilled to be part of the experience,” Zambrano said. She added that many Valley residents now living in San Antonio will also be in the stands, reinforcing the shared regional identity.

Looking ahead

UTSA’s early-season success sets a positive tone for the Roadrunners as they begin their campaign against familiar Texas opponents. For UTRGV, the loss is a learning opportunity as the young program seeks to establish itself at the highest level of college football. Both schools are investing in their football futures, and the rivalry promises to grow stronger with each meeting.

As the season progresses, fans can expect more high‑energy matchups, community involvement, and the continued development of South Texas college football.
