Labor Day 2026: Government, banks and markets closed while most retailers stay open

Labor Day this year falls on Monday, September 7. While the holiday honors American workers, it also brings a mixed schedule of closures and open doors across the country.

Federal and local government closures

All federal government buildings, including post offices, courts and public schools, will be closed for the holiday. This follows the tradition established after President Grover Cleveland signed the Labor Day Act in 1894.

Banking and financial markets shut down

U.S. banks and the major stock exchanges will not operate on Labor Day, giving workers a full day off from financial trading and banking services. Standard FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery will also be suspended, though critical services may still be available at select locations.

Retailers largely open

Most national retailers and grocery chains will stay open, many offering promotional sales to attract shoppers. The only major exception is warehouse club Costco, which will be closed for the holiday. Shoppers should verify hours with their local stores, as they can vary by location.

Travel outlook

Despite higher fuel prices—partly driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran—millions of Americans are expected to travel for the final major summer weekend. AAA reports that flight prices to top domestic destinations are about 20% higher than last year, and hotel rates have also risen. Gasoline averages just under $4.10 per gallon, up $0.90 from a year ago. However, cruises departing from U.S. ports are roughly 4% cheaper than last year.

AAA advises travelers to monitor weather conditions and perform basic vehicle checks—tires, battery, and fluid levels—before hitting the road. Packing an emergency kit with water, snacks, a flashlight and jumper cables is also recommended.
