Trae Young announces Young Family Athletic Center as part of major Yukon development

Washington Wizards point guard Trae Young, a native of Norman, Oklahoma, disclosed plans this week to open the Young Family Athletic Center in Yukon. The new facility will be the first phase of a larger mixed‑use development slated for land across from Yukon High School on Yukon Parkway.

Community‑focused vision

“This can’t be done with just one person; it takes a whole group; it takes a village to make something like this happen,” Young said at the announcement. He emphasized that the project reflects a commitment to give back to the region that helped shape his career.

Young’s father, Rayford Young, added that while Norman remains the family’s home, Oklahoma as a whole is “another piece of our home,” underscoring the personal connection that drives the venture.

Project details

The development, dubbed “Miller Crossing and Young Family Athletic Center,” will feature indoor courts, training rooms, and multipurpose spaces designed for youth leagues, school programs, and community events. The site sits on annexed property directly opposite Yukon High School, positioning the center as a convenient hub for students and families.

In addition to the athletic facilities, the broader plan includes retail and office space, creating jobs and expanding the local tax base. While an official opening date has not been set, Young indicated that construction will begin later this year.

Impact on local recreation

Local officials and parents have welcomed the project, noting that Yukon currently lacks a dedicated, state‑of‑the‑art sports complex. The center is expected to draw athletes from across the Oklahoma City metro area, providing a venue for tournaments, training camps, and after‑school programs.

“We’re excited to see a world‑class facility right here in Yukon,” said a Yukon city council member who attended the briefing. The council is reviewing zoning adjustments needed to accommodate the mixed‑use layout.

Young’s ongoing involvement

Trae Young promised to stay engaged with the center after its opening. “I’m going to be around too—and pop in every now and then to see the kids and do some things up here too,” he said, hinting at future visits and possible mentorship opportunities.

The project aligns with a broader trend of professional athletes investing in community infrastructure, reinforcing the idea that sports can serve as a catalyst for economic growth and family‑centered recreation.

Next steps

City planners will hold a public hearing next month to discuss the development’s design, traffic impact, and potential partnerships with local schools. Residents are encouraged to submit feedback through the city’s website.

With the Young Family Athletic Center, Yukon hopes to strengthen its reputation as a family‑friendly city that values both athletic excellence and community cohesion.
