Wyoming Game & Fish Urges Residents to Clear Yards of Hazards This Fall

With autumn comes the breeding (rut) season for Wyoming’s iconic large mammals. During this time, bulls and bucks travel widely, rubbing their antlers on trees, fence posts and any object they encounter to mark territory and shed velvet. When residential yards lie in the path of these migrations, everyday backyard items can become deadly traps.

What can cause entanglements?

Game and Fish biologists have identified several common household objects that wildlife may snag on, including hammocks, swing ropes, decorative string lights, soccer and badminton nets, and even lawn furniture. When an animal’s antlers become caught, the stress can lead to injury, aggressive behavior, and in severe cases, death.

How residents can help

North Jackson Wildlife Biologist Aly Courtemanch stresses the importance of proactive yard maintenance. “During the breeding season, males are very active and travel extensively, rubbing their antlers on almost anything they encounter,” she said. “We’re seeing an increase in reports of wildlife entangled in fencing, ropes, and lights. We’re asking everyone to be proactive and clear their properties to prevent these situations this fall.”

Homeowners in areas known for moose, elk and deer movement should:

  • Inspect yards for loose ropes, cords, and netting and remove or secure them.
  • Trim low-hanging branches that could snag antlers.
  • Store outdoor furniture and decorative items out of the animals’ path.
  • Keep pet toys and other small objects off the ground.

What to do if you find an entangled animal

If you encounter a moose, elk or deer tangled in yard debris, do not attempt to free the animal yourself. Stressed wildlife can become highly aggressive, posing a serious risk of injury. Instead, contact the Wyoming Game and Fish Department immediately. Reports can be made to the nearest regional office or through the agency’s Stop Poaching Hotline at 1‑877‑WGFD‑TIP (1‑877‑943‑3847).

The department will dispatch trained personnel to assess the situation and, if necessary, safely remove the animal. Prompt reporting helps protect both the animal and the public.

Why this matters

Wyoming’s wildlife is a treasured part of the state’s heritage and economy, drawing tourists and supporting hunting traditions. Preventing unnecessary injuries to moose, elk and deer preserves the health of these populations and maintains the balance of the ecosystem. Simple yard clean‑ups can make a big difference for animals that roam our neighborhoods each fall.
