Sisters Ranger District Schedules Public Meeting on Akawa Butte Fire Recovery

The Sisters Ranger District announced a public meeting for Monday, Sept. 14, to brief the community on recovery efforts after the devastating Akawa Butte Fire. The session will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the district office, 201 North Pine St., Sisters, Oregon.

Agenda and Presentation

Forest Service staff will open the meeting at 5:30 p.m. with a formal presentation covering two key topics:

  • Current implementation of vegetation management projects across the Sisters area.
  • The proposed recovery plan for the Sisters Canyons Active Restoration Project, which was heavily impacted by the fire.

Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and join small‑group discussions focused on specific concerns. The district is also offering a live‑stream of the entire presentation for anyone who registers in advance.

Background on the Akawa Butte Fire

The Akawa Butte Fire ignited on July 16 after a severe lightning storm swept across Central Oregon. The blaze consumed roughly 27,500 acres, including about 12,000 acres within the Deschutes National Forest. Of that, approximately 9,321 acres lie inside the Sisters Canyons Active Restoration Project area, a landscape now undergoing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) planning review.

Why This Matters to Residents

Vegetation management and restoration are essential to protect homes, recreation areas, and wildlife habitats from future wildfires. By involving the public early in the planning process, the Forest Service aims to incorporate local knowledge and address community concerns about road access, trail conditions, and the health of the forest ecosystem.

How to Participate

Anyone interested can attend in person at the Sisters Ranger District office. For those unable to travel, the district will provide a live‑stream link after pre‑registration. Contact Lauren DuRocher at [email protected] for additional details or to request the streaming link.

Looking Ahead

The meeting is part of a broader effort by the U.S. Forest Service to engage local stakeholders as the Sisters Canyons Active Restoration Project moves through its NEPA review. Continued community input will help shape a recovery plan that balances ecological health with the safety and enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
