Judge hears that 150 trees removed at East Potomac Golf Course under Trump administration plan

Washington, D.C. – A federal hearing on Thursday revealed that the Trump administration’s renovation of the East Potomac Golf Course has already resulted in the removal of 150 trees, according to the Department of Justice. The figure is dramatically higher than the roughly 60 trees that nonprofit Save East Potomac had estimated earlier this week.

Judge Reyes questions the scale of the project

U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes opened the hearing with a pointed remark, noting the irony of discussing tree removal on the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. She asked whether the administration’s plans were merely “plans until they are not,” emphasizing the need for transparency before any construction begins.

Justice Department attorney Michael Robertson told the court that the trees removed fall into four categories: hazardous, dead, dying, and invasive. He said the administration considers the removal routine maintenance and that the project is still seeking approvals from the Fine Arts Commission, the National Capital Planning Commission, and the required historical and environmental reviews.

Preservation groups raise concerns

Alex Rosen, a spokesperson for the nonprofit Save East Potomac, expressed alarm that the true scope of tree removal was only now becoming public. While the group did not specify whether any of the felled trees were cherry trees—a particular point of contention for the D.C. Preservation League—it warned that the loss of mature vegetation could affect the historic character of the course.

Several plaintiffs have filed a lawsuit seeking a court order that the administration provide a clear timetable for when construction will start. Their attorneys asked Judge Reyes to ensure the Trump administration complies with notice requirements, citing past projects such as the rapid demolition of the East Wing that proceeded with minimal public warning.

Administration defends its process

Robertson reiterated that the renovation is proceeding through all required federal review channels. He noted that the project is subject to the National Environmental Policy Act and other statutory safeguards designed to protect historic resources and the surrounding environment.

Judge Reyes indicated she could issue a decision on the lawsuit later this month, which could either allow the renovation to move forward or require the administration to provide additional notice and possibly modify its tree‑removal plan.

What this means for D.C. residents

The East Potomac Golf Course is a beloved public amenity that serves golfers, walkers, and families across the nation’s capital. The controversy highlights a broader tension between federal development initiatives and local preservation interests. Residents and advocacy groups will be watching closely for the judge’s ruling, which could set a precedent for how quickly federal projects are communicated to the public.

As the hearing concluded, both sides agreed that transparency and adherence to established review processes are essential to maintaining public trust in federal projects that impact community spaces.
